本剧翻拍自BBC的《英村脑残故事》。 这部半小时伪纪录片讲述表亲Kelly及Shrub Mallet之间的日常生活，他们在美国小镇上追寻梦想、面对各种挑战……以及为了冷冻披萨吵架。
第一季末尾，Sam见到了33年前的父亲，企图通过挽留父亲让一切恢复正常，但结果却让他大失所望。第二季Sam将继续寻找真相，本季结尾也将为Sam的时光之旅作出一个交代，他究竟是昏迷，发疯，还是真的回到了过去？而他与女警Annie Cartwright的感情又将何去何从？
第2季与第1季联系紧密，两者时间节点相隔差不多一年。第2季开场发生在一年后的万圣节，地点依然是印第安纳州的小镇霍金斯，这几个小家伙打扮成抓鬼敢死队。四个萌童中最醒目的肯定是威尔，第一季结尾时他咳嗽时吐出了一条虫子，这显然是为后续剧情埋下的伏笔。制作人之一的马特·杜菲表示：“他似乎能够看到表里世界(the Upside Down)的景象，问题在于这些景象到底是真的还是假的？看起来他正遭受着PTSD。”
